Just a word or two about the flooding in November, the River Cocker
raged down the Lorton Valley for a few days, but was soon back to its normal
level. Being situated up the side of the valley, Damson Ghyll was unaffected,
but the small bridge at Low Lorton was swept away (see photo here). The Scalehill bridge over the River
Cocker just below Crummcok Water survived so there is still access to the
other side of the valley and to Buttermere. So don’t be put off from visiting
the Western Lakes – even in Cockermouth, most of
the shops, apart from those on Main
Street, are open and many of those that were on Main Street have temporarily
re-located elsewhere in the town.
Damson Ghyll is situated at Latterhead, Loweswater in the Vale of Lorton in the
secluded north west part of the Lake District National Park and is an ideal base for
walking, cycling and touring. The towns of Cockermouth (Wordswoth’s
birthplace) and Keswick are nearby. Latterhead (circled in photos above) is a
small hamlet enclosed by Low Fell on one side (left hand photo above) and by
the higher mountains of Whiteside and Grasmoor on the other (right hand photo
above). There are 3 lakes within easy reach of Latterhead – Loweswater
itself, Crummock Water with its backdrop of Melbreak and Buttermere
surrounded by its own set of fells – Red Pike, High Stile, Haystacks and
Fleetwith Pike. The Vale of Lorton can be easily accessed over any of several
beautiful passes – Whinlatter, Newlands or Honister from Borrowdale or simply
off the A66 from Cockermouth. For cyclists, the Coast to Coast (C2C)
route passes the front gate.
