A comment
from a recent purchaser, Joseph Schaffer, Director of Technology, Bercen

“Everything looks just
outstanding. It is an excellent tool for us.”

The idea for
this CD-rom grew out of the author's involvement in running courses and
writing on certain aspects of paper chemistry over the last 20 years (see
below for more details). At the start of this time, there were no books of
any sort dedicated to this important subject, but, over the last 12 years, a
number of excellent chemistry-centred books have appeared in print to fill
the gap. The difference between these paper-based books and the "A-Z of
Practical Paper Chemistry" is that this is written specifically for
computer viewing and, as the title strongly suggests, is structured
alphabetically rather than in thematic chapters. However, the key to its
practical use is the bookmarked alphabetic arrangement allied to the
extensive hyperlinking within the text. Whilst it is probably most
intelligible to users with some chemical knowledge, it does provide
definitions of many general chemical terms to help the non-chemist.
The A-Z of
Practical Paper Chemistry can be used for various purposes depending on
circumstances:
- general training for
individuals who may follow their own particular sub-set of interests
within the chemical maze of papermaking
- reference source of
information on specific topics that can be looked up and located very
quickly
- machine trouble-shooting or
problem-solving using the many examples of chemical effects provided in
the text.
There are
about 800 alphabetic entries in Version 1.0, 2004 of the "A-Z of
Practical Paper Chemistry". They vary in length from short one-sentence
definitions (of topics such as ester or sugar) to short essays
of several pages (on topics such as adsorption, retention and rosin).
A list of the 800 topics is appended to this document. The document is
written in Microsoft Word 2003, but it may be available later in PDF format.
It is envisaged that the information will be updated and extended over time
within the Version 1.0 series and that a Version 2.0 may be published at some
later date. Later versions will be available to purchasers of Version 1.0 at
a substantially-discounted price.

DETAILS OF THE AUTHOR AND
ENVIROCELL
Leslie Webb has been working in the area of
paper chemistry for the last 30 years, having been responsible for this area
of research, consultancy and training at the UK technical centre, Pira, from
1983 to 1990. Since establishing Envirocell in 1990, he has continued his
work in this area through consultancy, training and writing activities. In
particular, he has been running seminars giving a 1-day "Introduction to
Paper Chemistry" and a more in-depth 2-day "Wet end chemistry"
programme for the last 20 years. As the other focus of Envirocell's
activities is the environmental side of the pulp and paper industry, a
particular interest is the environmental profile of papermaking raw
materials, which brings together the sourcing of primary materials, how the
raw materials are made, the chemistry of papermaking and what happens to the
product after use.
